“Regenerating an icon place for the community”

FABRIC was commissioned for the redevelopment of the Old Carmen Longo swimming pool in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan, transforming it into a vibrant, multifunctional hub for the community. Completed in 2022, the facility has quickly become a public success, attracting a wide range of visitors and establishing itself as a landmark for the city. The new building features an organic, fluid form, resembling a large “manta” floating above the ground, seamlessly integrated with the surrounding landscape. Its design emphasizes permeability, lightness, and a strong visual dialogue with nature. Internal functions — including a restaurant, bar, fitness area, changing rooms, and flexible public spaces — are distributed over two main levels and a basement, designed for clarity, accessibility, and smooth visitor flow. Large openings and connections with the outdoor areas allow users to enjoy the garden and natural surroundings while circulating through the building. Careful attention to materials, finishes, and lighting creates a contemporary, welcoming atmosphere, while landscaped outdoor areas reinforce the connection with the urban and natural context. The project successfully transformed a former public facility into a thriving community hub, combining social value, architectural innovation, and user-focused design. FABRIC’s approach demonstrates how thoughtful design can regenerate historic or iconic sites into lively, sustainable, and well-loved spaces that enrich the city and its residents.
